June 18, 2016A computer monitor is a key part of the computer hardware. It allows you to view videos and graphic information coming through a video card. The monitor is similar to a television but is has a higher resolution.
Monitors connect to an HDMI-High Definition Multimedia Interface, DVI-Digital Video Interface, or VGA-Video Graphic Array port on your computer. When you are ready to buy a monitor, make sure you know which connection your computer has so your monitor is compatible with your computer connections.
Monitors are separate from your computer. They connect through cable port which can be done through a video card or motherboard. Various types of monitors include LCD-Liquid Crystal Display and CRT-Cathode Ray Tube. LCD monitors are known for their clear graphic quality. They are much thinner and use less energy than a CRT which has become outdated. Like everything else, technology keeps moving forward and as newer items become popular the prices come down. It is more useful and economical to get a LCD monitor.
Most monitors are available in a widescreen format and range in size from 17″ to 24″ or more. You measure this from one corner of the screen to the other to determine the exact size of the screen.
Monitors on laptops and iPADs are built in as part of the computer system.
If you are having trouble with your monitor going black on you, check to make sure the monitor is turned on by finding a power light that indicates it’s turned on correctly. If the light is on, the monitor is on and you should see a message.
Be aware of any warning beeps or lights that indicate that there is a problem. If the power button or one of the status lights is red or orange or if the computer beeps several times when turning on, this is indicative of an internal problem.
If the power is on and everything looks fine, but you’re still not getting anything on your display, the computer may have gone into standby or sleep mode and isn’t being woken up. Try pressing keys on the keyboard or moving the mouse. If none of that works, try restarting the computer by pressing the power button.
