Infrastructure & Security

Abbott Informatics Cloud Services is built upon the excellent infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Its global data centers allow Abbott to serve a global customer base, which helps an organization to comply with both GDPR and HIPAA. Moreover, Abbott leverages AWS security features, including 256-bit encryption, that allow customers to work in a secure environment. Customers can determine the level of access appropriate for their organization. They can select public connectivity, which is available through the internet and secured by SSL/HTTPS. Alternatively, a company can choose private connectivity, which only provides availability behind the customer’s firewall.

Customers are given three environments (development, test, and production) for the mitigation of risk and to ensure the activities of development and testing are completely independent from production. The application servers of STARLIMS Cloud Services undergo deployment in an automated manner using the latest OS versions to ensure an operational system is stable and secure. Abbott can also quickly scale services to meet a customer’s current needs due to the flexible infrastructure of AWS.

Fully Managed Services

The Abbott Informatics Cloud Services worldwide staff members are experts in database, network, and server administration. Fully managed services include installation, malware protection, notifications, patch management, system monitoring, and additional tasks. Other services provided include database maintenance, as well as backup and retention services, which provides the retention of five weeks of backup sets.

Abbott also assists in planning and drafting a disaster recovery (DR) plan to minimize customer downtime. Production servers are designed for high availability, working in several AWS data centers in AWS. An annual timed exercise also tests the DR plan. Abbott has committed to a four-hour duration for RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and 15 minutes for its RPO (Recovery Point Objective). As a result, Abbott has achieved 99.9% availability for its customers.
